How to Check Tire Tread Depth?

You should already know that tire tread wears down over time and that driving without enough tread on your tires can put you at risk of everything from flat tires to accidents. Okay, but do you know how to check tire tread depth? It’s something every driver should learn, and all you’ll need is a ruler or penny! To find out if you need to order new tires, simply read on.

Recommended Tire Tread Depth

Before you measure the depth of tread on your tires, it makes sense to find out how deep it actually needs to be. Most new tires have a tread depth of between 10/32 of an inch and 11/32 of an inch – that’s about a third of an inch. If you have winter or off-road tires, the tread will probably be deeper. The same goes for some trucks and SUVs.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, you should replace your tires once the depth reaches 2/32 of an inch. Avoiding aggressive driving around Dayton and committing to proper tire care can increase tire life, but they’ll eventually reach that 2/32 of an inch depth.

How Do I Check Tire Tread Wear with the Penny Test?

A ruler is the most accurate way, but you can also fish a penny from your pocket and use that instead. Here’s how:

  • Ensuring Lincoln’s head goes in first, insert your penny into the tread groove.
  • Check Lincoln’s head is no longer visible between grooves.
  • Repeat this process at multiple locations on all four tires.

If you can ever see all of Lincoln’s head, your tire’s tread is 2/32 inches deep or less, and you can no longer keep driving safely across Springfield.

How Do I Check Tire Tread Wear Other Ways?

Pennies are a trusted go-to, but Huber Heights and Tipp City drivers can also use the following more proper tools to measure tread depth:

  • Tread Depth Gauge
  • Tread Wear Bars

You can find both from auto supply stores or online. Of course, the team at our service center will also be happy to carry out these checks for you, so feel free to schedule service.
