Perform a Check Engine Light Reset

1. Make sure your car is off and that the engine is cool. Then, equip yourself with safety gloves and glasses.
2. Find the negative terminal under the hood of your car, which will typically have a black cap and a negative (–) symbol on it. The positive terminal should be red with a positive (+) symbol, so make sure you are focused on the right terminal.
3. Using a wrench, loosen the nut on the negative terminal and pull the negative connector out from the battery, leaving it off to the side for upwards of a whole minute.
4. Finally, reconnect the negative cable and use your wrench to tighten the nut back.

Note that doing this could reset your vehicle’s Uconnect (or other infotainment) system. While this should work and keep your Jeep check engine light from being on, there is another option if it doesn’t.

Check Your Vehicle’s Gas Cap

What does the check engine light mean? One reason why your Jeep check engine light may be on could be due to a cracked or loose gas cap. If your gas cap is faulty, it will release fumes and should illuminate your car’s check engine light. If you have a cracked cap, you may have to replace it. Otherwise, you can always turn off your car and check to see if the cap is tightened. After you’ve re-tightened it, turn your car back on and see if the light turns off. If not, try disconnecting the battery from the abovementioned steps to perform a check engine light reset and see if that works!
